John Tradescant (the Younger) (1608-1662) is a celebrated botanist, most famed for his trips to Virginia between 1628 and 1637. Tradescant returned home with ships full of seeds to add to their family collection, The Ark.

Among the seeds he brought home to introduce to English gardens were great American trees, including magnolias, bald cypress and tulip tree, and garden plants such as phlox and asters.
