Gothic was the predominant architectural style of the Middle Ages. In the eighteenth century the style enjoyed a revival, being known as Gothic Revival or Gothick, initially in gardens and landscapes.
The later Victorian Gothic Revival occurred in the mid-nineteenth century. In the Victorian era the Gothic Revival was a reaction against classical architectural style and its symmetry. It began principally in churches and public buildings. The Gothic quatrefoil is one of the icons of Gothick style, etymologically meaning four leaves.
