The Greek Revival followed the rediscovery of Greek architecture during the Grand Tour period. The first significant study of architectural ruins was the 1751 expedition funded by the Society of Dilettanti of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett. As a result, the Ionian style became fashionable in England and the continent.
