A pergola is often used as a walkway or passageway and is formed of pillars or columns. If planted with climbing plants a pergola can provide shelter from the sun on a garden patio or terrace. A Haddonstone pergola is a garden feature forming a shaded walkway or passageway incorporating columns that support connecting timber or stone beams, or a combination of both. A pergola incorporating cast stone columns may be freestanding, an extension of a garden building or simply serve as protection on an open terrace or as a link between two garden buildings.
