4 Simple Ways To Attract Wildlife Into Your Garden This Winter

Winter is well and truly under way and if the forecasts are to be believed, then the next few days are going to be rather chilly.

Temperatures are thankfully not likely to plummet quite as low as they did during the cold snap last December.  However, even a slight drop in degrees can make life increasingly hard for our native wildlife.

That’s why we’ve shared our four favourite and very simple ways to attract wildlife into your garden this winter.

Treasue our feathered friends

At this time of year, native garden birds can really struggle to find enough food and water to survive throughout the colder months.

But investing in a simple Bird Bath or Bird Table is just one small way that you can help provide our feathered friends with the nourishment they need to keep them sustained throughout winter.

Adding an attractive cast stone Bird Bath or Bird Table to your garden not only creates an interesting focal point, they also attract wildlife from miles around.  So whether you fancy braving the freezing temperatures, or prefer to admire watching garden birds take advantage of your garden, a cast stone bird bath or table is a great addition to any garden.

Our collection is available in a range of colours, can be ordered online and some of our range can also be personalised for that extra finishing touch.

Let it flow

There are plenty of advantages to installing a beatiful water feature in your garden or landscape.

From creating a relaxing ambiance with its gently flowing sound, to adding life and vitality to an outside space, there’s no wonder that water features have been popular for hundreds of years.

But water features also have the added benefit of providing a self-sustaining ecosystem that attracts and sustains native wildlife all year round.

Self-contained fountains offer fresh water to a whole host of species and none more so than by attracting garden birds during the winter.  At this time of year, many water sources are frozen over, leaving our feathered friends with limited access to fresh water in which to bathe, or drink.

At ground level, large pool surrounds combined with centrepiece garden fountains offer an attractive habitat for attracting pond life to thrive.

Hedge your bets

Planting hedges, and in particular evergreens, is a simple yet very effective way of attracting garden wildlife into your garden during the winter.

In fact, native trees and shrubs offer the perfect habitat for garden birds in particular.  Create a wildlife haven by planting one or more of the following:

  • Hawthorn
  • Beech
  • Hazel
  • Holly
  • Buckthorn.

Remember: Avoid trimming your hedges during the nesting season to ensure the new generation of garden birds are left undisturbed.

  • leaves and braches

Create a comfortable and cosy hideaway

To any proud gardener, leaving debris and garden waste may look untidy and unsightly.  But to our native wildlife, all those dead leaves, branches and trimmings can actually help them to survive the depths of winter.

Generous gardeners can offer 5* treatment to creepy crawlies of all kinds by installing a bug hotel.  This doesn’t need to be anything fancier than placing a pile of dead wood in a quiet garden corner and covering it with fallen leaves and branches.

Decaying plants and fallen leaves provide a safe and cosy shelter for garden mammals such as hedgehogs, voles, shrews and mice.  Insects will also appreciate the hollowed stems of attractive perennial flowers, here they will seek refuge from frosts and rain.

In fact, there’s plenty of creative and simple ways to enjoy your garden this winter.
