Octagon Developments use Haddonstone for impressive Wootton Place development

The client

Octagon Developments is an award-winning developer of luxury new homes throughout greater London and the Home Counties.  Quality is synonymous with the Octagon name and they are committed to ensuring every home is finished to the highest of standards and specification, working with the most skilled and reputable craftsmen.

Haddonstone has worked with Octagon Developments for a number of years, partnering on a wide range of luxury developments.

The brief

Haddonstone was chosen by Octagon Developments to provide high quality architectural stonework for a series of impressive new luxury properties as part of the exclusive Wootton Place development.

Situated off Esher Park Avenue, Wootton Place stands on one of Esher’s most prestigious private roads and boasts classically designed homes offering contemporary and spacious living space.

Wootton Place is one of two private gated cul-de-sacs and features four elegant townhouses and three large detached villas.  All the homes are traditionally built, with elegant brick exteriors, stone detailing and their own private fully landscaped south west facing rear gardens.

It was imperative that the cast stone elements supplied for the project were of the highest standard both aesthetically and structurally, in order to meet the requirements of the high-end project.

The solution

We worked closely with Octagon Development’s designers and site staff to produce both standard and custom-made TecStone wet-cast components for the development.  Each component was produced in either Haddonstone Bath or Portland colours and these included classical window surrounds featuring sills, jambs, heads, cornices and bespoke pediments.  Many of the properties also incorporated simple yet stylish Haddonstone horizontal string courses, that surround the structure of the properties and add an attractive separation amongst the brickwork.

A large number of the properties also featured either a handsome cast stone portico incorporating an upper and lower cornice, an architrave and two columns, or an equally elegant door surround.  This striking feature presented us with an interesting challenge as Octagon Developments were keen that we cast the portico pediment in one piece, rather than in sections that would usually be fitted together onsite.  Given that the pediments weighed in excess of 750kg, we needed to work closely with our structural engineer to design the steel reinforcement and connections into the structure.  We produced custom moulds for the architrave component and each architrave was reinforced with steel, enabling us to create a singular architrave that could be lifted straight onto the structure onsite.

The result

The Wootton Place portfolio was completed in 2012 with prices starting at £2.75m for a semi-detached town house, rising to £4.25m for a spacious and elegant detached property.

David McColl, Chief Buyer at Octagon Developments said:

“We have been working with Haddonstone for a number of years. As a long-established family owned and run company, they have similar values to Octagon when it comes to maintaining excellence and perfection. Their technical expertise and quality of work is always outstanding and their stonework on some of our earlier developments looks as good today as it did when the buildings were initially completed. Costing is also key in these challenging times, and Haddonstone have always managed to work within our budgets”
