Lucius Septimus Severus was born in Leptis Magna, modern day Libya, and rose through the ranks of office to become the first African-born emperor of Rome from 193 AD.

Famous for advancing the Eastern Frontier, he waged war against the Parthians, extending the influence of Rome as far East as the River Tigris.
