In 1782, Bangkok became the capital of Siam (modern-day Thailand) and the ancient ruins of the Bang Pa-In Palace complex were rebuilt. Popularly known as the Summer Palace, the gardens were filled with classically-inspired stone bridges and balustrades along the canal, which was surrounded by pavilions, statues and planters in beautiful white stone.
