Tregunnel Hill Development

C G Fry & Sons chooses the Gibbs Range for Tregunnel Hill Development

The Client

Established in 1918 in the quiet Dorset village of Litton Chesney, C G Fry & Son began as a post war building repairs company. More than 80 years on, C G Fry & Son is now a renowned developer across the south-west of England and is most commonly known as the main contractor for the Poundbury Development, the vision of the Duchy of Cornwall.

The brief

Tregunnel Hill, is one of two developments in Newquay which were commissioned by the Duchy of Cornwall to champion sustainable development environmentally, socially and economically. With 174 superior quality homes, including 48 affordable homes, and around 30 employment opportunities, Tregunnel Hill provides a mixed-use neighbourhood in one of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts.

As main contractor for the Tregunnel Hill development, C G Fry & Son approached Haddonstone to manufacture high specification stonework for the development.

The solution

To enhance the façade of the development we worked closely with C G Fry to choose a portico that was in keeping with the development design. After much consideration it was agreed that the Gibbs Range of Classical Porches would be the most suitable in terms of style and quality of finish.

The Gibbs Range of Classical Porches was designed by Hugh Petter, Director of Adam Architecture, and inspired by the Georgian architect James Gibbs (1682-1754). Gibbs’ classical architecture design handbooks were probably the most widely used in the eighteenth century across the Western world. It was this rich legacy that made Gibbs’ version of the Classical Orders the most appropriate for this new range of Haddonstone porches.

We chose a Gibbs Porch for the Tregunnel Development as the design is equally suitable for both new and historic buildings. The porch not only enhances the entrance but sits sympathetically within the scheme.

The result

Our Gibbs Range of Classical Porches was well received by both the Duchy of Cornwall and the team at C G Fry & Son, who loved the versatility of the design, along with the high quality and specification stonework we manufacture.

Andrew Smith, Senior Buyer C G Fry & Son Ltd comments:

“Haddonstone is a well-known reputable company and we have used their cast stone architectural detailing at a number of our South West developments over the last ten years. We erected the Gibbs Classical Porch at Tregunnel Hill in Newquay and use Haddonstone because of the consistency, product quality, price and service”.
